Matrouh Olives:

 Many local and imported varieties are being grown in Egypt, such as Toffahi (apple), Agizi, Hamdhi (acid), Watiqin, and Shamlali which are of local varieties. Others imported types like Manzanilla, Picual, Kalamata, Mission, and Coratina. These varieties differ in their purpose for both table olive and oil production – there are also dual-purpose varieties. The most important varieties grown on the north-west coast are: –

 

Shamlali

It is a local oil variety, trees with a dense green total and widespread growth, and fruits with an oil content ranging from 15 to 18% and sometimes up to 22%.

 

Picual

It is an imported item and was introduced to the North West Coast region in the 1980s, and its cultivation has now spread. The trees of this medium-growing species are dense in total and bear stress conditions. It is characterized by floating and a double-purpose item. the proportion of oil varies between 15% and 22%.

 

Kalamata

It is a low-prevalence North West Coast, a medium-growing tree with a dense growing nature, with a high oil content (22-25%). It is a double-purpose item.

 

Manzanilla

It’s a low-prevalence dual-purpose item with an oil ratio of 16 to 20%.

 

Coratina

It is a low-prevalence item, although it produces the finest oil, ranging from 18 to 22%, so it is a single-purpose oil-producing item.

 

Koroneiki

 It’s a single-purpose item for oil production, estimated at 16 to 24%.

 Matrouh Figs (Sultani Fig)

 The Sultani fig is characterized by growth strength and large striped leaves with a bright green color. Fruits mature in mid-July, with the first type, the bony, growing on the rugged branches (more than a year) and the second (main) type, growing in the leaf armpits of branches that are less than a year old – the skin is greyish brown, the flesh is rosy, and fruits with high sugar and total solids content – the average tree production is 100-200 kg, depending on the amount of rain.

Matrouh Black grapes (Barrani grapes)

 Grape varieties are generally divided according to their purpose to:

  • Table grapes and raisins They are products that are suitable for fresh consumption or are dried for raisin manufacture and they are seedless.
  • Juice grapes It’s a collection of grapes that are suitable for the production of juice, both fresh and fermented.

Black grapes of Matrouh are considered from table grapes and are a seed variety with medium to large black fruits covered by a waxy layer, maturing in August and bearing large distances transportation. The cultivation of this species is concentrated in the area of Sidi Barrani, Matrouh Governorate, where the climatic conditions and the environment are suitable for the growth and production of this species, where it is grown on rainwater.
